The seal features the Roman goddess Virtus (symbolizing Virginia) who is dressed as an Amazon. She has a spear in her right hand and a sword in her left. Virtus has just vanquished Tyranny, who is lying beneath her foot with a broken chain in one hand and a scourge in the other, with Tyranny's fallen crown nearby. This scene represents the state's motto, which is written around the bottom of the seal: Sic Semper Tyrannis, which translates to 'Thus Always to Tyrants'.

The flag was adopted on Apr. 30, 1861. The state seal was adopted in 1776. Virginia is the 10th state of the union, gaining statehood on June 25, 1788. It is one of the original 13 colonies that united to form the union of the United States.
