The Flag of the Commonwealth of Dominica has a forest green background, with a tricolored cross. The colors of the cross are yellow, black, and white going vertically and horizontally across the flag. In the middle of the flag, there is a red disc with the image of a parrot standing on a twig, and ten lime green stars encircling the parrot.

Meaning of the Dominica Flag

The dark green background symbolizes the rich verdant forests and the general lushness of the island. The white stripe represents the clarity of the rivers and waterfalls and the purity of aspiration of Dominica’s people. The black color represents the fertile soil and agriculture, as well as the African roots of the people. The yellow stripes represent sunshine and the yellow agriculture produce of the country: citrus and banana. It also symbolizes the Carib and Arawak people, the first inhabitants of the Island. The cross represents the Christian faith of people, and the supremacy as well as the trinity of God. The ten lime green stars are the symbol of hope. They represent the ten parishes of the country, and the equal size of the stars represents equality among all of them. The red central disc stands for social justice, while the parrot features the Sisserou parrot, the country’s national bird and the symbol of flying and fulfilling aspirations. The parrot is also featured on the coat of arms of the country, thus representing the official seal of the country.

History of the Dominica Flag

Dominica was a British colony. It raised the blue flag with the Union Jack in the canton. On November 3, 1978, a new flag, designed by Alwin Anthony Bully, was hoisted. The design was modified three times. The changes included the order of colors on the cross and the direction of the parrot’s face.  The latest change was done in 1990, and the flag has never changed since then.
