The Chilean flag is made of two horizontal bands of white and red. White appears on the upper part of the flag, with a blue square at the canton, and a white, five-pointed star. The blue square is of the same height as the white band. The red band is on the lower part of the flag.

Meaning of the Chilean Flag

The star guides the path of honor and progress. It also represents the unity and legacy of the Chilean people. The blue color represents the sky, and the white is the color of snow in the Andes Mountains. The red stripe symbolizes the blood of those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the fatherland.

History of the Chilean Flag

Chile was under the rule of Spain until the beginning of the 19th century when it started to strive for independence. The cockades worn by patriots were colored white, blue, and yellow. A tricolored flag was hoisted in 1812, but as Spain crushed the rebels, the flag was banned. In 1817, a transitional flag with white, red, and blue was adopted, then the current flag design became the emblem of the emerging republic. The designers of the flag were Bernardo O’Higgins and Colonel José Ignacio Zenteno. It was introduced by a Legal Decree on October 18, 1817. Every year on July 9, Chile celebrates the flag date to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Battle of La Concepción, during the War of the Pacific.
